Harold “Hal” Carleton Steves, 87, was born September 28, 1924 in Columbia City, Oregon.

Harold served as radarman 2nd class on the command ship USS Mt.McKinley. He received 4 stars for Pacific duty and one star for the liberation of the Philippines.

Harold’s hobbies included amateur radio. As KL7HJD, he served as a disaster-relief volunteer for Alaska and helped those living in the bush with crucial communications.

Harold and XYL Voyla lived in Anchorage, Alaska during two periods from 1951-56 and from 1971-1991. They lived in Seattle in the interim, and retired to Roseburg, OR in 1991.

Monday, June 18, 2012, the graveside committal for Harold C. Steves will be at the Roseburg National Veterans Cemetery on Harvard Avenue at 11:00 am. The Memorial Service will follow at the Westside Christian Church, 2712 W. Harvard Ave. at noon with a reception to follow immediately in the church parlors.

Very sad, bitter and unexpected … Accept my condolences. Hal will always remain in my heart, as the bright and kind person. His bright soul will remain forever with us.
